(Sam Walton’s Made in America is a good record of what that revolution was like from the inside; consumers tended to be quite happy with the whole thing, since corporate savings could be passed on in the form of cheaper goods.) And it’s the same reason why in the ‘50s and ‘60s you saw the rise of laundromats, vending machines, self-service gas stations, and “fast food” restaurants like McDonald’s.
