Friedmann had begun writing for Prison Legal News while incarcerated. By the mid-two-thousands, he’d worked his way up the masthead to managing editor. He was a lifeline to writers behind bars. One young inmate, Christopher Zoukis, thinking he might have some talent as a journalist, wrote to Friedmann, who hired him.
